True wealth comes from contentment.

The culture offers much, but with a trap.

Gratefulness is the antidote to greed.

Be careful when you seek justice.

The Cross turned justice into grace.

Doing right requires justice and mercy.

Sin requires the sacrifice of blood.

Everyone has sinned and needs a Savior.

The cross of Christ paid our debt from sin.

We all crave the acceptance of others.

The self love is not the Gospel’s priority.

Love Jesus or the shallow love of strangers.

Living a life of perfection or of grace.

Godly perfection is not about behavior but Love.

Seeking approval is a sign of growth.

Desiring universal approval leads to paralysis.

Don’t quit because it is difficult.

Stay strong by holding on to Jesus.

We do what is easy not what is important.

Anchoring deep means resting in Jesus.

Repentance

Psalm 32

INTRO. Repentance is a subject we don’t hear much about in our day.

WHAT IS IT?   Repentance is the recognition of our sin and our need and willingness to allow God to forgive us and make the needed changes in our life. It is the doorway to the room of living in a relationship with God. Repentance is essential for living as a Christian.

Jesus began his public ministry with the words: "The time has come, the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe the Good News." Mark 1:15

WHAT DOES REPENTANCE INVOLVE?   (Four basic parts or steps as follows.)

1. A change of mind.   HEAD
2. A change of heart.   HEART
3. Confession (admitting our sin) MOUTH
4. A change of action.  HANDS
5. A CHANGE OF MIND.

"Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2

1. We must become aware of our sin and need to repent.  (Conviction for sin)
2. The Holy Spirit may use various means, such as a sermon, Bible study, personal experience etc. to reveal our need to us.

Example from scripture.  (Isaiah had a vision of God as he mourned the death of his longtime king. In this vision he saw the Holiness of God and as a result also saw his own sinfulness and cried out: "Woe is me, for I am lost...") Isaiah 6:5

1. We must own up to our sin.
2. No excuses like:      It wasn't my fault!  Everybody does it!    Things just happen!
3. We must see and agree with God regarding our sin and the needed changes in our life.
4. CHANGE OF HEART.

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."  Psalm 51:10

1. It must also affect our heart (emotions) Will.
2. There must be a real describable all to do God's will.
3. There needs to be true sorrow for sin.
4. Sin is heart breaking as well as law-breaking.
5. It breaks God's heart as well as his laws (commandments).
6. It has tragic consequences.

(Comparison to when traffic laws are broken) This may result in injury or death to someone including ourself.

3. The wages of sin is death.
4. We experience sorrow not only for the transgression but for the break in relationship with God, others or even within ourself.

III. CONFESSION OF OUR SIN.  (With our mouth)

"Then I acknowledged my sin to you (God) and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the guilt of my sin."  Psalm 32:5

1. We own up to our sin. We confess it to God.

Sometimes we have to confess it to another person, especially if our sin involved them.

1. Sometimes it involves a general confession.
2. Prayer of confession in a service, like before Holy Communion.
3. Response to a call to commitment or repentance.   (Altar call)
4. CHANGE OF ACTION.  (Hands)

"Produce fruit in keeping with repentance."

1. With God's help we seek to refrain from future sin.
2. Not repeating the sins of our past.

Ill. of Jesus final statement to the woman caught in adultery.   "Go and leave your life of sin." John 8:11

2. Through spiritual growth we become increasingly aware of God's desire and will for us.

As a result of our increasing love for Him and desire to serve Him we increasingly seek to be obedient to Him.

This helps us become increasingly aware of ourselves, our weakness and temptations.

3, When we do fail and sin; we can ask for his forgiveness and he offers it lovingly.

1. Also when we come to Christ at conversion, his Holy Spirit comes within us to aid and guide us.
2. This along with God's Word (the Bible) prayer, worship and support of other Christians gives us to the strength we need to resist the temptation to sin.
3. Sometime friends, counselors like pastors or others, and groups like AA or Teen & Adult Challenge can assist us in special areas as needed.

CONCLUSION

The Lord wants us to develop a penitent spirit.  Ask the Lord to help you develop this. Remember our eternal salvation depends on this on our part. The Lord does the rest.  Amen
